Customer service is not new to the service industry. Businesses need those customers to keep the business afloat. If the customer does not like the service they receive, they can go elsewhere.

In the fire service, it can be a little harder to "go elsewhere." In today's economic times, it can be real tough to get additional funding or convince the public taxpayer that you need more money or new equipment if the taxpayer is not happy with your service delivery. While the chief may buy into customer service, it takes all members to make it work. You can call something you do customer service, but if just one person doesn't get what customer service is all about, then your "weak link" is showing. People remember more of the small, bad moments than they do the many great things you do. Show your people how to accomplish and buy into customer service.
